Part 14: Meanwhile at U.N.I.T Headquarters, Miss Stewart received word that the orb had returned.
The Doctor's former companion, Martha Jones was the first to see the orb in its current state.
She was too horrified to speak.
Martha then ran to the phone and called Miss Stewart.
"Ma'am, You need to take a look at this." She said
In the TARDIS, the Doctor thought Danny could use some cheering up so, he set the TARDIS to go back further to Earth history.
"Okay Daniel, have a look outside!" The Doctor said in excitement
Danny's eyes lit up as he looked up at the Doctor.
"Alright!" Danny cried as he ran outside
"Be careful Danny! You don't know what's out there." Trent said
Soon, Raven joined the two Time Lords at the entrance of the TARDIS and asked "Should we follow him?"
Trent turned to his sister and replied "Good idea, Sis!"
The Doctor overheard the conversation and asked "What are we doing standing around chatting for? Let's see what's out there!"
"But before we do, you might want to keep Amelia in the TARDIS and leave the safety on just in case we run into trouble while we're here." Raven said
" Good thinking, darling. We can't have that!" The Doctor said before going back in the TARDIS to put Amelia safely in her cradle and turn the safety on then came back
"Who's with Amelia?" Trent asked as the Doctor returned to them
"K-9. I've made some modifications to the TARDIS' safety system so that it can sense who is in at the moment. Right now, it should be playing a series of lullabies to distract Amelia from knowing that I've stepped out. If there should be a problem, We'll mostly likely get pulled back to the TARDIS by way of molecular transport.
"Meaning?" Trent asked
"We'll be turned into tiny molecules and get shifted back to the TARDIS where we came from where *hopefully* we end up back in one piece." The Doctor said
"ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" Trent asked
"Don't look at me. It was your sister who suggested that I leave my daughter in the first place." The Doctor said
"Doctor!" Raven said angrily
"Sorry." The Doctor apologized
Soon, their banter was cut short when Danny came running up to them.
"Doctor! Doctor!" he yelled
"Danny! There you are!" the Doctor replied happily
Soon, Danny joined the Doctor, Raven and Trent by the TARDIS.
"Doctor, King Arthur wants to talk to you. It's very important." he said
The Doctor smiled and straightened his bow tie.
"Oh! You hear that Raven?" He said, turning to Raven "King Arthur wants to have tea with me!"
Raven smiled and replied "That's nice, dear but I actually received a message from K-9 stating that the Orb has reached U.N.I.T Headquarters already."
Soon, the Doctor's expression of happiness turned to utter confusion as he was soon turned to molecules and lifted from his standing place outside to a standing position at the TARDIS console.
He looked around for a moment then his confusion broke when he heard Amelia giggle.
The Doctor looked down at his daughter and with a smile patted her on the head then leaned over to her level and said "That's not fair. I've had moments when I didn't look so funny...Do you really think I looked funny just now?"
Amelia gurgled in reply
The Doctor stood up and sighed "Must be something wrong with the Molecular Transporter."
Later at U.N.I.T Headquarters, Miss Stewart escorted a young consulting detective and his blogger to the room where the orb was being held.
"I don't see why you couldn't hire a professional or just wait for the Doctor." Martha whispered
"He may not be a professional but he was all I could find and besides, The Doctor's dog, K-9 picked up the call so he must be on another one of his travels." Miss Stewart replied
"Excuse me?" the blogger, John Watson asked "When can we see the...uh...what is it called, Sherlock?"
"The Orb of Life." Sherlock replied, while inspecting dust particles with his pocket magnifying glass on a nearby table and making deductions that the night janitor had probably left early
"Yes. Thank you...When can we see it?" John asked, turning back to Miss Stewart
"Through that door. The orb is in a large containment area." Miss Stewart replied
"Thank you, Miss Stewart." Sherlock said before he and John entered the room
Back in the TARDIS after the short lived adventure in the middle ages, The Doctor received a message on his psychic paper.
"Help me!" he read out loud
"What's that, Doctor?" Danny asked
"It's psychic paper. Through this, I can receive messages, write notes and even use this as an I.D. to get into top secret locations (not recommended if you plan to sneak into an R rated movie however). Pretty cool, eh?" The Doctor said
"Yeah!" Danny replied
Soon, Raven was looking over the Doctor's shoulder.
"Who needs your help, Doctor?" she asked
"I don't know. Let's find out." The Doctor said then, turned to Danny "What do you say, Danny boy?"
"Let's go!" Danny replied
Soon, the Doctor started the dematerialization process as Danny observed.
"Come on, Danny! Let's go on an adventure!" The Doctor said
Danny cried out in excitement while the Doctor put an arm around Danny and cried out "Geronimo!"
Meanwhile at U.N.I.T, Sherlock and John inspected the orb but something unusual happened.
The minute John touched the orb, he saw several images and memories of every Time Lord who had used the orb with the last being Mother since the orb granted her new regeneration cycles.
"John?...John?! Are you alright?" Sherlock asked, worried
"So many births...So many regenerations...so many memories...of kingdoms, conquerors, great empires lost, Powerful rulers, great wars and lives lost... Oh Sherlock, help me!" John said
"John, snap out of it!" Sherlock shouted as he grabbed John and shook him gently but then heard something "Do you hear that?"
John soon came to and asked "Hear what?"
"That!" Sherlock replied as he pointed to a wall behind the orb as it began to move
"What should we do?" John asked
"we're going in." Sherlock replied
"What?" John asked in shock
"Come on, John!" Sherlock replied, practically pushing him
Meanwhile, the TARDIS landed in an unknown location.
"Where are we? What is this place?" Danny asked
"We have landed inside U.N.I.T Headquarters." K-9 replied
"That's impossible! This part of U.N.I.T looks completely different from any other I've ever seen." The Doctor said as he scanned the area with his sonic screwdriver "Of course! We've landed in some kind of memory fortress."
"But how come U.N.I.T never mentioned a secret gateway into a memory fortress?" Raven asked
"You would be surprised at the secrets U.N.I.T keeps when I'm not around." The Doctor replied as he waved his sonic screwdriver
"Master?" K-9 asked
"What is it, K-9?" The Doctor asked
"My sensors detect two males, one human and one human-time lord approaching at a great speed." K-9 said
Raven felt her hearts jump into her throat. Her son had found her.
"We have to hide the TARDIS!" The Doctor said before re-entering
Raven grabbed his coat tail and said "No! Doctor, there's something I have to show you." Then, using her magical abilities, Raven created a window that produced images of herself and her son, Sherlock as a child.
"Doctor, I have a son...He's here." she confessed
"How?" The Doctor asked
"I was raped. I ran to you for safety but you don't remember because so much of the past has been erased from your memory." Raven said
"It makes sense now. You're the same person as you were then. Raven West is alive." The Doctor said
Raven was about to reply when she heard a familiar voice.
"Mother? What are you doing here?" It was Sherlock
Raven ran to Sherlock and was soon overcome with tears.
"Sherlock! I thought I would never see you again! My GOD, You've grown up! The last time I saw you, you were up in a tree on Gallifrey watching the Doctor leave his TARDIS!...And of course, when you were taken from me." She said
"You don't have to worry, I'm here now. I'm not going anywhere." Sherlock replied while taking his mother in a loving embrace
"Excuse me, I hate to break up this family reunion. But my sonic screwdriver is acting very strange and picking up very unfamiliar signals." The Doctor said
"Unfamiliar signals?" Raven asked while looking at her son who looked at a square shaped imprint in the dirt and analyzed it.
"Sherlock? Are you alright, love?" Raven asked
"Another TARDIS was here. I can tell by the imprint that a police box from 1963 was parked here and then moved after some time. Maybe an hour judging by the slight change in the imprint's shape. There are also small stones in a strange circular pattern than in a path which tells me the TARDIS took off here but had difficulty landing in the next destination. The TARDIS that came before yours, Doctor, is still here." Sherlock deduced
"Brilliant isn't he?" Raven said with pride
"Yeah." The Doctor replied "Now, let's find that other TARDIS!"
"Wait, Doctor! You're not seriously considering this, are you?" John asked
"Of course, Dr. Watson. I would be crazy not to." The Doctor replied
John shook his head as he and Sherlock followed the Doctor, Raven and their companions.
Soon, the group found the other TARDIS and what the Doctor saw shocked him.
"Oh Blimey! We're in my past!" The Doctor said with wide eyes
Soon, the TARDIS doors opened and someone stepped out.
"Is that Susan?" Raven asked
"Yes." The Doctor replied "Although, I don't know why she is coming this way."
The group watched as Susan came toward them
"Excuse me?" She asked
The Doctor turned in shock and replied "Yes. Hello! I'm John Smith, History Teacher."
"Pleased to meet you, Mr. Smith. My name is Susan. May I ask (if it's not too much trouble) why you and your friends are here?" Susan asked
The Doctor panicked and fell silent.
Then, Sherlock stepped forward.
"Maybe I can explain." he said
"Oh will you? That's great!" Susan replied
As Sherlock explained what happened, something else was going on.
The wall was closing, separating Sherlock and Susan from everyone else.
"Mr. Holmes! Where is everyone?" Susan asked, frightened as she grabbed onto Sherlock
"They're gone. They disappeared behind the wall." Sherlock replied as he looked over and noticed that Susan was beginning to cry
Soon, Sherlock found himself in an odd position where he would have to comfort Susan.
"Come on Susan, Don't cry. We'll see everyone again soon." he said
"Are you sure?" Susan asked
"Of course. All that needs to happen is for that wall to move." Sherlock said
"Well," Susan asked "Can't we do something about it?"
"There is one thing." Sherlock said, reaching for his pocket then pulling away suddenly "But you probably wouldn't like the idea."
Soon, Susan took notice of Sherlock's hand near his pocket.
"What's that in your pocket, Mr. Holmes?" She asked
Sherlock took his gun out of his pocket and held it carefully and replied "This is a gun. A 22-mm pistol to be exact."
"Why do you have it?" Susan asked
"I get bored." Sherlock replied
Susan gave Sherlock a blank stare.
"Alright! I lied. It's for protection!" Sherlock said
"Why would you need protection?" Susan asked
"You wouldn't want to know." Sherlock replied
Susan glared up at Sherlock in offense and said "I am not a child Mr. Holmes! I want to know why!"
"And I'm choosing not to tell you because it's for your protection!" Sherlock replied then, he put the gun back
"Why Mr. Holmes? Why would you protect me?" Susan asked
Once again, Sherlock was in an odd position where he had to tell Susan that he had to protect her.
And feelings didn't come natural to Sherlock so this was really difficult for him.
He breathed a sigh and ran a hand through his dark curls then said "I just want you safe, Susan."
Susan hung her head "I'm sorry, Mr. Holmes. I didn't know." She said
Sherlock lifted Susan's chin and said "You have nothing to be sorry for, Susan. You did nothing wrong. Now, stay here and I'll look for a way back."
Soon, there was a loud noise that caused a great disturbance and scared Susan to the point of tears.
Sherlock looked at the young Time Lady as she cried into his chest.
"There, there...Don't be frightened. Remember what I said earlier? If anything happens, I  would protect you." Sherlock said
"Now that you mention it, I do remember." Susan replied as she smiled through her tears
"And as long as I'm here, you'll be safe." Sherlock said "Do you trust me?"
"I trust you. I know you would never hurt me and do all you can to protect me." Susan said
Sherlock took Susan's hand and said "Let's find a way out, shall we?"
Susan looked up at Sherlock and replied while smiling "Sounds like an adventure, Papa."
At this, the color in Sherlock's face drained in shock.
Susan had called him 'Papa' instead of 'Mr. Holmes'.
He thought to ask Susan why she called him this but something distracted him.
Sherlock soon noticed a crack in the barrier keeping himself and Susan from everyone else. But his focus on it would soon be torn away when he heard Susan scream.
Meanwhile on the other side of the barrier, John was having trouble with the orb energy still flowing through his brain.
"AAAAAAAAAGGGHHH!!!!" He screamed in pain as he remembered something from the Time War
By this time, the first Doctor, Ian and Barbara were outside and standing with the group watching John go through this terrible chain of events.
"Doctor! Do something! This man is not well!" Barbara shouted
"I'm thinking!" both Doctors replied in unison
"How long is Dr. Watson going to be like this?" Danny asked
The first Doctor put a comforting hand on Danny's shoulder and replied "My dear boy, give it time. Dr. Watson is going through a series of events in Time Lord history as a result of touching the orb of life. The first thing we should do is come up with a solution to fix Dr. Watson's problem of seeing visions from the past."
"Well technically Doctor, The visions he's seeing now are visions of my past and your future. Things that have already happened on my end of the timeline that have yet to happen on yours. Funny thing, Time...How it can be so linear one minute then you turn around and the next you know, you have one big wibbly wobbly Timey Wimey mess!" The Eleventh doctor said
The First doctor gave his successor an odd look.
"You're proof that I'll eventually go mad." he said
Soon, Raven came out of the First Doctor's TARDIS after doing some important scan work.
"Doctors! I found something! There is a crack in the memory wall separating us from Sherlock and Susan. Apparently,  how it got there was Susan said something the entire environment in this place somehow predict a future between Susan and Sherlock." She said
"What sort of future?" the 11th Doctor asked
"A future where Sherlock is Susan's father." Raven replied
As soon as said that, Trent saw something.
"Look! The wall's moving!" he said
Ian looked around and saw it too and said "So it is!"
"And look! It's Sherlock and Su-Oh no!" Barbara said as she ran to Sherlock who carried a stunned Susan in his arms
"What happened?" Raven asked
"Sherlock breathed a tired sigh and replied "Daleks. They just appeared out of nowhere. Susan got hurt but not fatally...I pulled her away just in time. But I'm worried about her."
He then laid Susan on the ground, kneeling at her side.
The First Doctor watched Susan's still face as Sherlock took his coat off and covered her with it.
"We shouldn't have come here." the 11th Doctor said
"Who knew this place was dangerous? Maybe we should leave." Raven said
"A wise idea, my dear." the first Doctor said
Soon, John had come out of his deep sleep after having experienced a moment of memories from the orb.
"What happened?...Sherlock?" He asked
"There's no time to explain, John. We have to leave." Sherlock replied as Susan soon woke up
"Papa?" Susan asked
Sherlock stroked Susan's hair and replied "I'm here, Susie. We'll have to leave now. It's not safe here anymore."
As the first Doctor, Ian and Barbara went back to their TARDIS, Sherlock helped Susan to her feet as she began to cling to him and cry.
"What is it, Susan? What's wrong?" Sherlock asked as he wiped tears from Susan's face
"I don't want to leave you, Papa...I don't want to go!" Susan cried
Sherlock pulled Susan in for a comforting embrace and kissed her forehead.
"My Susan...My girl, Don't fear the present because we already know the future. Go on Susie, we'll see each other again." he said
Susan looked back at the TARDIS in the shadows then back at Sherlock and hugged him close "I'll miss you, Papa." she said
Sherlock kissed the top of Susan's head and said "I'll see you soon."
Then, the time came for the consulting detective and his future daughter to part ways.
When both Sherlock and Susan got to their TARDISes, they stood at the entry looking at each other until Sherlock mouthed the words "I'll take care of you." before closing the door to the 11th Doctor's TARDIS
Once back at U.N.I.T, things were back to normal.
Sherlock and John were inspecting the orband The Doctor was meeting with Kate Stewart.
"Now that the Orb is back in U.N.I.T hands, we can now study its functions and learn about how the Time Lord race was maintained. Thank you, Doctor." Miss Stewart said
"I can assure you, Miss Stewart. It was nothing." The Doctor replied
"Just knowing the orb is safe and inactive is enough for us." Raven said
"Erm, yes...about that." Miss Stewart said
"What is it?" The Doctor asked
Miss Stewart breathed a sigh and smoothed out her skirt. She looked as if she had bad news.
"Doctor, we had to call in a detective because while the orb was missing, it was used as a killing machine." she replied
The Doctor took a seat and put his face in his hands in disgust.
"How could this happen? All those innocent lives...gone! The orb should have never come here!" he said "It has to go back!"
"But Doctor, Gallifrey is time locked!" Raven said
The Doctor sat up and looked forward.
"I'll find a way to open the lock. But before I do that, I need to know where the orb is." The Doctor said
"In the containment room being looked over by the detective and his assistant." Miss Stewart replied
Raven turned to the Doctor and said "We have to find them."
Meanwhile in the containment room, Sherlock and John continued to inspect the orb.
"Lestrade will definitely want to hear about this!" John said
Sherlock looked up and said "We can tell him later. Although, I'm almost positive he's not going to believe a giant glass ball from outer space killed thousands of people." he replied
"You're right. He would think we're mad." John said "But what about the madman who stole this thing in the first place and fixed it to kill people?"
"If he shows up, let U.N.I.T handle him. Besides, as Lestrade would say if he were to suddenly show up 'It's not our division'." Sherlock said as he put his black light down "Of course, if I had my way, the man would be rotting in a jail cell after this nightmare is over."
Then, Sherlock touched the orb to inspect it.
This worried John.
"Sherlock?" he asked "Are you sure you should be touching that? It could get you pregnant. You know, you being half-time lord and everything."
Sherlock laughed and shook his head "Don't be so sure John. This orb has been inactive since I've been looking at it."
John sighed "I hope you're right, Sherlock."
Sherlock turned "Of course I'm right. Why wouldn't I be?" he said as he continued to inspect the orb
Soon, the orb started to glow a bright white glow.
John looked on in shock "Sherlock! The orb!" he said
"What about it?" Sherlock asked
"It-It's glowing." John replied
"What?" Sherlock asked before getting blinded by the bright light and tripping on his black light "Aaaaagh!!"
"Sherlock, are you alright?" John asked as he helped Sherlock up
"Yeah. I'm fine." Sherlock replied "I'm going back to the orb."
But Sherlock!" John said
"John! I said I'm fine. Don't worry." Sherlock replied as he then continued to inspect the now blinking orb
"That's odd." Sherlock said
"What's odd?" John asked
"The orb is blinking. We'll have to watch it closely." Sherlock said
"Not for long. Look!" John said as he pointed to the orb's opening as a birth took place
Sherlock backed away in shock "This thing can give birth?!" he asked
"Sherlock! That isn't important now. You need to get that child out of the orb!" John exclaimed
"Why me?! You're a doctor! Why can't you get it out?!" Sherlock asked
"You're bloody Time Lord! You know the orb better than I do!" John replied
"I'm only half and yes, I do know the orb." Sherlock sighed "Alright, I'll get the child out."
Sherlock turned to see the baby's head and shoulders coming out quickly. So, he took off his shirt and waited to catch the child.
"Here it comes." John said as he watched Sherlock nervously
There soon came a small cry from the small child in Sherlock's arms.
Sherlock looked at the child and said "We've been saying 'it' this whole time when we should have been saying 'her'."
"It's a girl?" John asked
Sherlock laughed in reply.
"Congratulations, Sherlock. You have a daughter." he said
"What?" Sherlock asked, surprised "Oh nonono...I can't be. Could I?"
"Sherlock, You touched the orb the baby has to be yours." John said
Sherlock looked down at the baby in his arms as she wrapped her hand around his finger.
"On second thought, she does seem naturally comfortable around me." Sherlock replied as he locked eyes with the infant
"And she looks like you...a bit." John said
Soon, the Doctor and Raven entered the containment room.
"Ah! Hello! I hope I'm not interrupting anything important. You see, I need to take that orb back to the planet where it came from so th-" The Doctor was about to say when he noticed the baby in Sherlock's arms "Oh Blimey!"
"Something wrong, Doctor?" John asked
"No. It's nothing. It's just that this baby reminds me of a member of my own family." The Doctor said
"What are you talking about?" Sherlock asked
The Doctor continued to look at the baby and asked "Oh Susan, what happened to you?"
"I'm sorry?" John asked
"It's nothing." The Doctor replied
"Wait! Susan...I've heard that name before from the Doctor. The orb must have given birth to the Doctor's granddaughter." Sherlock said
"So, she's not yours?" John asked
"Of course he's the father! Susan was reborn. Once a person is reborn, they start a new life with a new family and possibly a new name." The Doctor said
"Then that means oh my GOD! I'm a grandmother!" Raven cried
Congratulations Mother!" Sherlock said as he smiled
"So I guess you'll be naming her Susan?" John asked
"Of course." Sherlock replied
Later at the hospital, Sherlock sat in the nursery holding little Susan and counting her little fingers and toes.
He was mesmerized by the mere thought of having Susan in his life that the cares of his detective life seemed like a blur at the moment. Of course people would have their opinions about Sherlock's sudden thrust into fatherhood like this but he wasn't one to care what others thought (mainly because to him, everyone's opinions DIDN'T matter)
Sherlock kissed Susan on the forehead as she yawned.
"My Susan...My girl, not even an hour old yet and I'm already attached to you. It's funny what new life suddenly does to a person like me. All of a sudden I can feel things I've never felt before (or only felt while in the presence of your grandmother because most of the world around me doesn't care)." He said
Susan looked up at him inquisitively.
"You can't understand a word of what I'm telling you, can you?" Sherlock asked with a chuckle "Maybe in a few years."
Sherlock watched Susan as she reached for his scarf and clung to it.
Sherlock smiled "I'm going to take care of you, little one and I'm going to love you just like your grandmother loved me. And I promise as long as I'm around, nothing bad will ever happen to you."
